What is Familial Alzheimer’s Disease (FAD)?
Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) is a rare genetic form of Alzheimer's disease. It is caused by inheriting mutations in one of three genes: APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2. People with these mutations typically develop Alzheimer's at a younger age, often between 30 and 50 years old.
People with FAD also have a 50% chance of passing the disease on to each of their children. That means families with this mutation often see FAD affect many loved ones (siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins) across multiple generations.
Genetic testing resources
One big decision members of the FAD community face is whether to seek genetic testing. If they decide to do so, they have to navigate living with the results.
In these guides, we’ve compiled insights about the genetic testing journey, both from experts and those who have gone through it.

Though community, we address barriers that keep FAD patients from participating in clinical trials, ultimately accelerating Alzheimer’s research.
We're a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that was founded in 2020 by members of the FAD community. We are volunteer-run and patient-led.
In the past, when our families were diagnosed, we felt isolated and lost. Our hope is that through Youngtimers, families will never have to feel alone.
