The Science of FAD: Onset, Progression, and Genetic Variability

  • https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85645514915?pwd=vKuhcjyJW50PRVKX0fBdbcaI419yeL.1 (map)

What drives familial Alzheimer’s disease?

Why do symptoms begin when they do? How does the disease progress over time? And why can the experience look so different from one genetic mutation to the next?

Join us for a live virtual conversation with Prof. Bart De Strooper, a world-renowned Alzheimer’s researcher and founding director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, to learn about all this and more.

About this event

Wednesday, February 24, 2027 at 11 AM Central (CST)
That’s Noon Eastern (EST), 10AM Mountain (MT), or 9AM Pacific (PST). Convert to other time zones.

Join us for a live virtual conversation in which Prof. Bart De Strooper will walk us through:

  • What drives the onset of symptoms in familial Alzheimer’s disease (FAD)

  • How the disease progresses over time

  • Why the experience can vary so much across different genetic mutations

This is a great opportunity for our community to hear directly from a leading voice in the field and ask questions about the research shaping our understanding of FAD.

About Prof. Bart De Strooper

Prof. Bart De Strooper is professor of molecular medicine at KU Leuven and VIB in Belgium, and professor in dementia research at University College London. He was the founding director of the UK Dementia Research Institute from 2016 to 2023.

His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. His major findings include identifying the γ-secretases and their role in processing the amyloid precursor protein and Notch. More recently, his work has explored how different brain cell types contribute to Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2018, he shared the Brain Prize with John Hardy, Christian Haass, and Michel Goedert for their groundbreaking research on the genetic and molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is an elected member of EMBO and of the academies of medicine of the UK and the USA.

Who should attend this event?

This conversation is open to family members in the familial Alzheimer’s disease community. The event will be recorded for those who aren’t able to make it.
